Cold-Pressed vs Concentrate Sea Buckthorn Juice

16 Sept 2026  •  Amisha Surana

Cold-pressed sea buckthorn juice and juice made from concentrate are different products, and for once the marketing distinction reflects something real. Cold pressing avoids one round of heat; concentrate adds at least one.

Here is what each actually means, and how much it matters.

What cold pressing means

Fruit is pressed mechanically without added heat. Some warmth is generated by the pressing itself, but the process does not deliberately heat the juice to extract more from the fruit.

Because vitamin C and some delicate compounds degrade with heat, avoiding a heating step preserves more of them. That is the whole argument, and it is a sound one.

One thing worth being clear about: cold pressed does not mean unpasteurised. A bottled juice sold at room temperature will still be heat treated for safety. Cold pressing refers to extraction, not to the whole process.

What concentrate means

Juice is heated to evaporate water, leaving a thick concentrate that is far cheaper to store and ship. Water is added back later to reconstitute it.

It is a legitimate process used across the food industry. But it involves heating the juice, and if the reconstituted product is then pasteurised, the fruit has been through heat at least twice.

Concentrate also exists largely because of distance. Fruit that must cross a border is usually concentrated first. So "from concentrate" often carries a sourcing story as well as a processing one.

Which is better

Cold pressed, not from concentrate, is the better starting point. Fewer heating steps means more of the fruit survives.

But it is worth keeping this in proportion. Two other factors influence the final bottle at least as much.

Time between harvest and pressing

Sea buckthorn starts losing nutritional value the moment it leaves the branch. Fruit pressed near where it grew begins from a higher point than fruit that waited days in transit. A cold-pressed juice made from tired fruit is not a good product.

How much fruit is actually in the bottle

A cold-pressed juice that is 20% sea buckthorn and 80% water and apple concentrate is worse than a straightforward juice with more fruit in it. The extraction method does not rescue dilution.

How to check

Look for "not from concentrate" stated plainly. Look at where sea buckthorn sits in the ingredient list. Look for added sugar or sweeteners. And ask where the fruit was grown, because that determines how far it travelled before anyone pressed it.

Vague words are the tell. "Cold pressed" on the front with an ingredient list beginning with water is a design decision rather than a product one.

Our own approach

Our fruit comes from Ladakh, and the processing method is the part of this business we take most seriously — the founder's consistent position is that processing decides whether the nutrition survives at all.

Manufacturing is WHO-GMP certified and batches are tested at a NABL-accredited laboratory, with no added sugar, artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners.

The full set of checks is in how to choose a genuine sea buckthorn juice.
