Does Sea Buckthorn Juice Cool the Body?

13 Sept 2026  •  Amisha Surana

Sea buckthorn is not traditionally classified as a cooling food, and we are not going to tell you it cools the body, because that is a claim within a framework we cannot support with the evidence we have.

What we can do is explain where the question comes from, and what is actually true about drinking it in heat.

Where the question comes from

In Indian food culture, most people sort foods into heating and cooling — the Ayurvedic concepts of ushna and sheeta. It is a genuinely useful practical framework that households have used for centuries, and it is the natural lens through which a new food gets assessed.

So when a Himalayan berry arrives in the Indian market, the reasonable question is: which is it?

Why we will not answer that definitively

Two reasons.

First, sea buckthorn does not have a settled classical Ayurvedic classification the way amla or ghee does. It grows in the high Himalaya and has been used in Tibetan and Ladakhi tradition rather than being a central plant of classical Ayurvedic texts. Different practitioners will place it differently.

Second, nutritional composition and thermal classification are different systems. We can tell you what is in the fruit. Translating that into a heating or cooling verdict would be us guessing in someone else's framework, and we would rather say so than invent an answer.

If this matters to you, an Ayurvedic practitioner who knows your constitution is the right person to ask.

What is actually true in hot weather

Diluted, it contributes to fluid intake

Taken as 20 to 30 ml in a full glass of water, most of what you drink is water. In summer that is not nothing.

It is not a heavy drink

A diluted juice sits lightly compared with a milk-based or sugary drink in heat.

No added sugar

Many summer drinks are sugar delivery systems. Our juices are made without added sugar, artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners.

What genuinely cools you down

Water, shade, rest, and the traditional summer foods that Indian households already know — buttermilk, coconut water, cucumber, watermelon. None of that needs a bottle.

Sea buckthorn is a nutrient-dense addition to a diet. It is not a coolant, and it is not competing with nimbu paani for that job.

The honest position

If you want sea buckthorn for its nutrient profile, summer is as good a time as any and dilution makes it easy. If you are looking specifically for a cooling drink, there are better and cheaper options and we would rather say so.

A brand that answers every question with "yes, ours does that too" is not being helpful. This one we genuinely do not know, and we would rather leave it to someone qualified in that tradition.
