Is FSSAI Certification Necessary for Sea Buckthorn Juice?

FSSAI registration or licensing is legally required for any food business selling in India, and that includes sea buckthorn juice. So the answer is yes — but the more useful question is what an FSSAI number actually tells you, because it is less than most people assume.
What FSSAI is
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is the regulator for food in the country. Any business that manufactures, packs, stores, distributes or sells food needs either a registration or a licence depending on its size and scope.
The licence number is required to appear on the label. If a packaged food product sold in India does not carry one, that is a straightforward legal problem and a good reason to walk away.
What the number does tell you
It tells you the business is on the regulator's record, is subject to inspection, and is required to meet food safety standards for hygiene, permitted additives, labelling and contaminant limits.
That is a real floor. It is not nothing.
What it does not tell you
Here is where expectations usually run ahead of reality.
An FSSAI licence does not certify quality, only compliance. It does not tell you the concentration of sea buckthorn in the bottle. It does not tell you where the fruit came from. It does not mean anyone has verified a health claim on the pack. And it is not the same as organic certification, WHO-GMP manufacturing certification or independent laboratory testing.
A heavily diluted, sweetened juice with an FSSAI number is entirely legal. The licence is the entry ticket, not a mark of distinction.
How to check a number
FSSAI numbers are 14 digits and can be verified on the authority's own website. If a brand's number does not check out, that tells you something worth knowing.
What to look for beyond FSSAI
Since the licence is a floor rather than a standard, these are the things that actually differentiate.
Where the fruit came from
A brand sourcing genuinely can name a region. Ours comes from Ladakh.
The ingredient list
Where does sea buckthorn appear? Is water or apple juice concentrate ahead of it? Is there added sugar or a sweetener?
Manufacturing certification
WHO-GMP certification describes documented processes and controls rather than a general promise. Our products are manufactured under it.
Independent testing
Batch testing at a NABL-accredited laboratory means someone outside the company has checked. We do this.
Organic certification
A separate certification with its own audit trail. Ours has been in place since 1993.
The practical summary
FSSAI is mandatory and its absence is disqualifying. Its presence, on its own, is not a recommendation.
